Mitsubishi Meets Part 2

Mitsubishi Meets Part 2

12 May 2010 in Let's Talk Comments off

Summer is pretty much upon us. Of course, we (read: Brian) live in Phoenix, Arizona, so summer is always upon us, but things are warming up in the northern hemisphere and it’s getting tricky to corner folks for interviews. We’re still chasing down leads and working on bringing you the best in original Mitsubishi content, but we’re adding a little something else to the mix.

Know how, when we interview Mitsubishi owners, we end up asking one or two people a truckload of questions? Well, you might have noticed the Mitsubishi Meets Part 1 post last week. While we continue our global search for Mitsubishi owners with stories to tell, we’re going to start asking one question to everyone every week. This week, we’re continuing the Mitsubishi Meets theme and we hope you’ll share your stories with us. Our question this week…

How often do you get together with your local Mitsubishi friends?

Since spring/summer is here . . . We're able to meet up with the local Utah DSM'ers at the racetrack every other week if not weekly.

PS. Utah DSM is coming up on its 10 year anniversary this June. We're celebrating with an all hands on deck BBQ!

Nice! You guys go racing every weekend up there? What track? Are there
things to do for people who are JSB and can't race?

Curious to learn more about your 10 year BBQ up there too. That's an epic
    party to plan!

Racing is a Rocky Mountain Raceway – http://www.rmrracing.com and it's almost every Friday night.

If you aren't racing you can watch or just come to hang out. There is also a drifting event that happens along side (ok, not right next to it) the 1/4 mile action at the Midnight Drags.

Honestly, here in Colorado it feels like the DSM community has been slowly disbanding over the past few years. I still know and talk to a few of my DSM friends occasionally but only because they've moved on to other groups that I'm also a part of.

  • http://dr1665.com Brian Driggs

So the DSM community is fading in Colorado, then? Do you know of any other
Mitsubishi groups that regularly get together in your area? What are these
other groups you're all a part of nowadays?

My local Mitsubishi friends are the best. We all have 2gnt's, and all are members of 2gnt. We get together at least twice a month to grab dinner, cruise, or work on each others (mainly mine, lol) cars. I talk to Mikey everyday, and Zac at least every other day.

We have such a tight knit small community here, that I think it makes us better. We are more involved with each other – not only with our cars, but also personally.

In the future I have been kicking around the idea of getting other Mitsubishi guys together locally, open our worlds up a bit so to speak.

That's pretty cool, Tim. Are you saying your car breaks down twice a month,
    then? Haha.

Up here the Washington, just because it gets a bit chilly in the winter time doesn't stop us from meeting up, averaging about 2 to 3 larger car meets a month. The local Evo community that I prefer to hang around with are a pretty tight knit group as well, we have some friends that live all the way up in Vancouver, B.C. that will make the effort to drive down to the Seattle area to come meet up for weekend events. Normally meet up once a week or every other week on a regular basis to chill for a few hours or so, lately the meet ups have been revolving around trying out new restaurants. Though, since now that spring has come around, the more track oriented meets are starting up. Oregon Trail Rally is this weekend so a lot of the southend/northern Oregon guys will be there for the weekend.

As we look at it out here, the Evos and WRXs are the new wave of DSMs as the that community is fading away, though they still make it out once in a while for a meet, but for the most part haven't been very active in recent years.

Hah! No, I just always have more goodies to put on it :) Well, except that headgasket thing… :P

2 or 3 meets a month? Even in the colder, winter months? That's incredible. You guys ever do anything like the Forest Fighters in Sweden?

Nothing to that extreme, doesn't get that cold here.

I don't know of any major Mitsu groups anymore (honestly I haven't looked that hard) but most of the guys that I still know are now part of the AWD Pirates. It's a group of mostly Subaru guys but they accept most anyone that isn't a douchebag ricer. There's still quite a few 1g and 2g guys and a fair share of Evo drivers, but we're definitely the minority. Not a huge surprise considering Colorado is the LARGEST Subaru market in the entire world

Honestly I feel that the decline of the Mitsu groups is largely due to the environment around here. Winter gets pretty harsh at times and the Eclipse/Talon tends to be seen as a summery sports car. I see a lot of cars going up for sale every fall and spring when people are wanting to switch to practical winter cars or don't want to deal with the repairs that winter storage and neglect have caused.

  • http://dr1665.com Brian Driggs

Wait. Colorado is the Subaru capital of the world? I thought that was
Vermont or New Hampshire. Maybe I'm mixing up the old Volvo/Saab capital of
North America or something. Go figure.
I've never heard of AWD Pirates. Are they more like NASIOC or Dirty Impreza?

How tough does winter get up there? You above 10,000ft or something?
Remember the blizzard of 2006 around Christmas? I drove my FWD Talon in that
stuff. Only got stuck once! (Thank goodness there was a Starion owner around
    to help push me out!)

Thanks for sharing, Erik. This is good stuff. I wonder if any other
Mitsubishi owners out there are experiencing the same thing?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/BFEW7DIRCM33FD25ECJXHLRPLQ Erik

Yeah, it's the Subaru capital of the world. I should know, I work for a Subaru dealer in the parts department.

The AWD Pirates are mostly just known in Colorado because it's mostly a local group, but there are ~5000+ active members. It was originally an offshoot of Club WRX but has growm into so much more. AWDPirates.net

Winters really aren't that bad, I'm just on the southeast end of the Denver metro area. The real winter problem is all the non-native people that have no clue how to drive in the winter

  • http://dr1665.com Brian Driggs

If you've got 5000+ active members in Colorado, that's got to be the
undispited Subie capital of the world. :)

Last time I was out off roading with a group of Subaru owners, they seemed
to talk as though their cars never broke down. How would someone in the
parts department at a Subaru dealership know there were so many owners
around if they never require parts?

    I smell irony.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/BFEW7DIRCM33FD25ECJXHLRPLQ Erik

LOL! I know how many active members there are because of the forums. The cars are pretty reliable (but so are stock DSM's) and most of the issues we see are with the NA cars. The bean counters got their hands on the NA headgaskets. As for the turbo Subarus a lot of the issues are mostly user error and neglect (just like DSM's!)

I really would like to find more Mitsu guys that aren't all EVO snobs,(sadly there are a bunch of them that look down on everything else) because a sunday cruise would be a ton of fun. We have some awesome mountain roads that are great for cruising.

    Those guys are nuts!
